Emmaville Primary School

Scotland Year 1

Welcome to the Scotland Year 1 Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.
Thursday 4th July 2024

We have been very adventurous with our languages in Scotland class this week. We have learned parts of Incy Wincy Spider in French (L'araignee Gipsy)- well done everyone (tres bien!!). How much can you remember to tell your family at home?

We have had a very creative and practical lesson in science. We have been planning, predicting and investigating the forces 'pushes' and 'pull'. We had a huge pile of t-shirts and a trolley ( with wheels) and an empty box with no wheels. We predicted which one would be harder to push/ pull and why. They we all had a turn to move the t-shirts into the different containers to test if we were right. We kept the amount of t-shirts the same so it was a FAIR test. We were right!

A great week, Scotland!!
Friday 12th July 2024

What a week we have had in year one!! Enrichment week has brought so much joy and we have learned so many new things, which has been exciting for us all. Miss Anderson had no idea we were such good actors until she saw us in our Olympics drama session- we did so many fun things- from becoming human chariots to time travel!

We have completed some very creative work this week, including designing our own Emmaville Olympic mascot- we really got into the spirit of this and the names for the mascot were fantastic, such as: Emmy, Villie and so on. During art we studied Henri Matisse and his colourful work. We cut out silhouettes of different sporting events and stuck them over our tissue collage background- they were so effective!

Who knew Scotland were such good cooks?! With Tiny Tasters we made our own burritos, starting with making our own salsa, then a mixture of different beans, barbeque sauce, then we grated some cheese and put everything in a wrap which went in the oven. We were super excited to take them home and eat them at home-time!

At home-time today we will be revealing the sporting heroes of our class- it was such a hard decision as everyone who took part spoke so well. We made it fair by voting for who had included all of the Olympic qualities. An exciting afternoon ahead... along with skateboarding ( Mrs Wallace and Miss Anderson are just as excited as the children!!)
Friday 19th July

What an amazing way to end my time at Emmaville! It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Year One- who have had a FABULOUS last week of term. We have completed all of our jobs in our books and written some very impressive letters to the new Year One class coming up from Reception.

They are so grown up now and really ready for the challenge of Year Two. Each week the behaviour has been even better than the previous one - how fantastic! EVERYONE in Scotland Class should be extremely proud of their journey from where they started in September to now- WELL DONE!!

HAVE AN AMAZING SUMMER- STAY SAFE AND HAVE FUN.

Friday 21st June

This week, the children of Scotland class were absolutely amazing at Sports Day. They were put into their house teams and took to the field.

There were some competitive elements to the afternoon where the children had to compete against each other to win points for their respective houses. It was so amazing to see how they supported each other and cheered each other on.

Other events were just for fun – like the skipping and the Speed Stacks.

We all had an amazing time!

Friday 14th June

This week I really want to celebrate all of the children in Scotland class who have worked so hard with their phonics skills.

The children had to do a little job this week where they had to read some words to the teacher.

They were all absolutely amazing! They were able to read so many very tricky words. I was so proud of them!

Have a fantastic weekend and get ready for Sports Day and another fun week!

Well done Super Scotland!

Friday 7th June

We have had the most amazing day on Thursday on our class visit to Belsay in Northumberland. The children were absolutely fantastic!

We walked through the amazing grounds of Belsay following the ‘wild child’ sensory trail. This meant that we had to stop at certain points on the designated trail to complete some sensory themed tasks. We had to lie down at one point and look at the sky – the children loved doing that!

We had to look at different textures of leaves and smell the different leaves and flowers on some of the other plants dotted around the gardens. Our trail eventually led to the castle and the new park area.

The children had an amazing time playing in the park as a treat for their fantastic behavior. Even members of the public commented to the teaching staff about how well behaved they thought our children were – one man even said we were the best-behaved children he’d ever seen! But of course, this was not surprise to us!

In the castle the children watched an animation about the Middleton family and their links with the ‘wild man.’

They had an exciting time investigating the different floors of the castle and learning some more about the interesting ruin.

On the way back to the bus we were able to investigate the quarry garden more and find more interesting trees and plants.

As you will see from the photos, the children had the best time and all of the teachers who went with us had a brilliant time too!

Well done Scotland class for your brilliant behaviour and for learning so much!

Thursday 23rd May

Throughout this term we have been focusing on the master technique of printing. We have linked this learning with the aboriginal people of Australia.

We have looked at how we might create the printing techniques similar to the art work we have studied.

Every week we have been using aboriginal art as a stimulus for learning. We have use different things to print with: fruit, leaves, sticks, cotton buds and our fingers. The children have practiced this technique.

As you will see from the photo below the children worked together this week to create a class picture. We are proudly displaying it in our classroom.

Friday 17th May

In Scotland class we are always reading! We love to be able to have a good look at a book.

This week, we have been sharing some of our favourite books with our friends. It is always lovely to heat the ‘book chats’ that go on between the children.

A particular favourite book is the ‘Starry Bear’ book that contains pictures of the children when they were in Reception class. It is falling apart it has been read so much!

The children read a wide range of books - poetry, fiction and non-fiction. They are always very keen to share a fact that they have learnt or tell about a world record that has been set in the Guinness Book of Records.

As part of our quest to become more amazing readers the children have been practicing their phonic skills as well. Every day we complete various phonic based activities. This week we have been using our laminate sheets to spot the ‘Fred sounds’ in real and alien words.

Friday 10th May

On Wednesday 8th May, we had an exciting afternoon at Thorp Academy. We were invited to take part in a multi skills event.

The field was packed with lots of other Year One children.

Scotland class took part in throwing, running, balancing and catching events. They rotated around the field to the different carousel of events. They had a thoroughly brilliant time!

I imagine that everyone slept very well that night – I know the teachers did!

Here are some of the things that the children wanted to say about the afternoon. Also, some children completed their homework to write a recount of the event. These are included in the accompanying photos.

We had so much fun!    Bobby

Friday 3rd May

This week in science, the children were looking at different types of deciduous and evergreen trees. We had to learn about what these scientific words meant and then we looked at the different features that these tree leaves might have.

After this, we went on a tree hunt around the local park and identified lots of different trees such as oak, sycamore, silver birch and beech. The children collected various fallen leaves from each tree. There were some leaves that we could not identify at the park so we had to bring them back to school to look them up using the internet.

We talked about what types of trees we could see in our local environment and which was the most common. We found out that the most popular were hawthorn and sycamore trees.

The children were all inspired and are going to look for lots more trees on their way to and from school.

Friday 26th April

We had a fantastic time on Thursday visiting the newly refurbished Crawcrook library.

The children are always so keen to go and listen to Kyle read them a lovely story before they complete a story based ‘treasure’ hunt.

The children listened to the story Elmer – one of their favourites – and then were surprised to hear that Elmer is 35 years old this year!

After that they worked in pairs to look around the library to find pictures that had a letter on. Then they had to put all of these letters in order to find a word – which they all managed perfectly!

Finally, they were able to choose some of the books to look at in the children’s book area.

A fantastic time was had by all – the new look library certainly got a thumbs up from us and we’ll be back to visit soon!

Friday 19th April

Wow – what a great first week back. Everyone is back and ready and raring for the Summer term.

We started off the week with a visit from the amazing Gateshead School’s Music Workshop team.

This term the theme was Samba – a music genre that originated in Brazil.

All of the children took part in learning how to clap and dance to the ‘samba’ rhythms. We had to listen carefully to all of the different instruments and how they sounded when they were being played.

Then it was our turn to have a go! All of the children were split into different teams and had to follow a conductor who told us what our rhythm was and when we had to clap it. It got very complicated! But, in true Scotland style we used our ‘growth mindset’ and were successful.

As you will see from the accompanying photos the children had a great time with the different instruments. They learned the names of them as they played them:

Repinique

Surdo

Ganza

Agogo

Tambourim
