Welcome to the Scotland Year 1 Class Page. Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.
Friday 22nd December
I can't believe we are already at the end of our first term. It has been fantastic to get to know the children in Scotland class. We have had such a busy term.
The children are so excited for Christmas and have really enjoyed all of the Christmas activities we have been completing over the last few weeks.
This week has been the Christmas part week and all of the children looked amazing in their party clothes. They had so much fun - dancing and playing lots of games. Pin the nose on Rudolph was a funny one which they giggled and giggled at - probably because they were so dizzy after being spun around!
We have also had time to learn a Christmas themed poem that we wanted to share with you.
I want to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and I look forward to hearing all about the exciting times the children will have had in the new year.
Friday 15th December
This week has been Enrichment week in school. The title for the week has been:
‘A cover is not the book so open it up and take a look,’ - you might recognise the words as they belong to a song from the musical Mary Poppins.
Throughout the week we have been learning a dance routine to accompany a small part of the song. It has been very tricky but we used our ‘Growth Mindset’ to get it right! Hopefully we’ll be able to share it with you soon!
We have also had a lot of fun thinking about different Oracy projects too linked with our theme.
The children were able to look at a wordless book called ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker. As we looked at the story we created some small dramas that linked with the pictures. The children had to think about what might be happening in the different parts of the story and then act that section out using their great speaking skills.
We have also had lots of opportunities to read and share our favourite books with our friends. We had a paired reading session too, where we were able to read with our friends in Year Six.
In our class we have spent time looking at different authors and what we like about their style of writing. It has been wonderful to read all the different story books that the children have brought in to share.
We created a map that showed all of the books that we read in 24 hours. It was interesting to see when children like to read the most – bedtime and while eating breakfast were quite popular times.
A lovely week sharing stories and reading with each other.
We had a fantastic time yesterday when our ‘grown ups’ cam in to help us create some lovely Christmas crafts.
We made paper plate Santas and baubles. Snowflakes of all shapes and sizes were made using scissors and careful cutting techniques – it was very impressive to see how many different design were created.
Another favourite activity was creating a Christmas jumper. There were some great designs - I think they should be in the shops for next year!
As you can see from the photos the children and the grown ups all had a brilliant time. What a way to get us all in the festive spirit!
This week we want to share with you some of the work that the children have been completing in Maths.
We have been learning about 2 and 3 dimensional shapes. After the children had finished learning all about the shapes and their different properties, we gave them a challenge to create some 3D shapes using lollypop sticks and blu tac.
It was really good to see the concentration on their faces as they worked in small teams to complete this very tricky task!
Some of the children were very successful and managed to create a 3D shape - which are still displayed on our Maths Learning Wall. However, some of the 'builds' were less successful and collapsed to lots of giggles!
Following on from our art work last week, the children really wanted to share their paintings with you from this weeks lesson. They worked with such concentration to complete the task.
The task was to add black and white to the primary colours and investigate the changes to the original colour.
They first painted the primary colours and then added a little bit of black. They then repeated the task but this time adding white.
As you can see from the finished paintings all of the children did an amazing job!
This week in our Art lessons we were learning all about the Primary Colours. We found out that these were red, blue and yellow.
During the lesson we were able to investigate how the different colours combined to make other colours. We had to talk to our partners first to think about what colours we might create. Most of us guessed the correct colour combinations!
It was great fun using all the different paint colours to find out what would happen when they were mixed.
Next week, we are going to be investigating what happens when we add black and white to a Primary Colour.
Friday 10th November
It has been a great week back in Scotland – everyone returned well rested after their half term break. The tooth fairy must’ve been very busy for the amount of missing teeth we have! There were even a few birthdays to celebrate too! All the children were very keen to tell us all of their holiday news.
We have started a new Science topic – learning all about the weather. The children knew a lot of different types of weather and could talk about some of the different types of weather that they have already experienced.
We had a look at a wide range of weather symbols and see if we could identify them. We were able to identify all of them correctly. After that, we looked at how the weather might change across the seasons in the year.
It is great to be learning about something new and seeing how the children are so enthusiastic to learn!
Well done Super Scotland, it’s great to have you all back!
Friday 28th October
Wow! I can’t believe we are already at the end of our first term together. What a super half term it has been.
All the new children in Scotland class have settled in so well to their new classroom and all the new routines.
They have all learned so much too!
This week, I was amazed by the number of children who did their homework and were able to tell me all about the life of Florence Nightingale. The children knew why she was so important and could tell each other about the amazing changes she brought about in nursing.
We have also completed out Design and Technology project this week. We created our moving pictures to share with the Nursery class. It was lovely to welcome Nursey into Scotland class and see how maturely the Year One children shared their completed books.
Well done to all of the children in Scotland for their amazing learning this half term – have a lovely rest and I can’t wait to se what the next term will bring!
Friday 20th October
We had a fantastic time yesterday when we visited Crawcrook library.
We were able to take part in a lovely story time. Our story was called 'Potion Commotion' by Peter Bently. It was all about a little witch who tried to make her own tea when her Mum was out. Unfortunately, it had disastrous consequences as her cauldron overflowed and flooded the village!
After that we all took part in a treasure trail around the library to find lots of hidden images that had a letter with them. When we collected all of the letters we had to spell out the mystery word. The children were able to work out that the word was 'Halloween.' It was quite tricky to find all the letters - they were very well hidden!
Finally, the children were able to have a look at the books in the library and read some to each other. They were very excited to know that if they visited the library themselves they could take up to twenty books out! Hopefully they will be visiting the library again soon.
This week in Maths, we have looking at how to partition different numbers. We have worked on this skill in our Maths Mastery sessions too.
It has been amazing to see how skillful the children are at partitioning different numbers.
We have used lots of different resources to help us with this task: ten frames, cubes, counters and part, part whole models. They were very confident to use the part, part whole models to support their partitioning.
The children have been able to solve tricky word problems linked to this area of learning too. It has been lovely to see how the children work with their work partner to share thoughts and ideas about a task.
You are all amazing Mathmagicians!
Friday 6th October
As this week contained National Poetry Day, we spent lots of time in our English lessons studying poetry.
Our stimulus was the 'spell' book The Lost Words written by Robert Macfarlane and illustrated y Jackie Morris.
The book is full of naturally themed nature poems - which are referred to as 'spells.' These are all set out as acrostic poems.
At the beginning of our task we went out into the park to look for different items that excited us in nature. As you will see from the photos, we found leaves of every different colour, sticks, acorns and even conkers!
This led to some very lovely descriptive writing back in class:
Lovely red and yellow leaves falling down Every leaf is not the same A leaf is falling down Fun, crunchy leaves
Trees are big and small and brown and green
Rough bark
Everyone kicking leaves in the air
Every tree is special and everyday people like to play with them
As part of National Coding Week, the children in Scotland class practised some unplugged coding using dance moves during our PE lesson. Unplugged means working without an actual computer.
We looked at a specific set of dance moves and then we worked with our work partners to create a routine.
We gave our friends instructions following a specific sequence that had to be followed. Our friends could not change the sequence at first and had to follow what had been created for them.
If a routine did not work as successfully as we had hoped, then we looked at how to ‘debug’ our code and create a newly coded set of instructions.
As you can see from the photos the children were excellent at following the coded instructions and really enjoyed getting their dancing shoes on!
In Scotland class this week, we have begun to learn a new language – French!
We have been accessing a new website called Language Angels which is beginning to guide us through how to greet our friends.
So far, we have learnt how to say ‘Salut!’ to our friends and family and how we say ‘Bonjour’ if our greeting is a little bit more formal - to someone we don’t know as well.
As we were so impressive learning how to greet people, we then extended our learning to find out how we would tell people what our names were.
The French expression is ‘Je m’appelle…’
We were able to practise saying all of the phrase together ‘Bonjour, je m’appelle…’
I was really implresseed with how well all of the children in Scotland were able to speak in French. The children were able to sing French songs too!
‘Bravo l’Ecosse!’
Friday 15th September
We have had yet another lovely week in Scotland class.
The children produced some super aerial views of school on Tuesday in their Geography lesson which focused on our local environment and our school area.
In PE lessons we are completing activities linked to Team Building. It was fantastic to see how the children were able to work together to complete the tasks.
As you can see from the photos, the children worked with their work partner to put a ball between them using a different part of their body each time. The children had a lot of fun balancing the ball and were very good at working out the best ways to move around without dropping the ball.
We have had an amazing week in Year One. We have played lots of games and have completed lots of activities to get to know each other.
It has been really nice to get to know such a lovely group of children. We have had a lovely time together.
As our class is called Scotland - Wednesday was our Scottish day.
We used the atlas's to find Scotland. We also had a Scottish feast - Scotch pies, Scottish strawberries, shortbread and porridge. It was interesting to see who liked which food the best. As you would imagine the shortbread and the strawberries were popular but the porridge was a winner too!
I am really looking forward to the rest of the year and all the fun we're going to have!

Part 2: Cookie Policy
Last Edited: 22nd April 2021
This Cookie Policy explains how eSchools use cookies and similar technologies in our Services. It explains what these technologies are and why we use them, as well as your rights to control their use.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small data files that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies are widely used by online service providers in order to (for example) make their websites or services work, or to work more efficiently, as well as to provide reporting information.
Cookies set by the website owner or service provider (in this case, eSchools) are called “first party cookies”. Cookies set by parties other than the website owner are called “third party cookies”. Third party cookies enable third party features or functionality to be provided on or through the website or service you are using (such as advertising, interactive content and analytics). The third parties that set these third party cookies can recognise your computer both when it visits the website or service in question and also when it visits certain other websites or services.
Why do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?
We use first party and third party cookies for several reasons. Some cookies are required for technical reasons in order for our Services to operate, and we refer to these as “essential” cookies. Other cookies enable us and the third parties we work with to track and target the interests of visitors to our Services, and we refer to these as “advertising” or “analytical” cookies. For example, the embedding of YouTube and Vimeo videos, as added by individual schools, will require “advertising” cookies to be enabled in order to successfully play them. Schools that, for example, opt to track visitor data using Google Analytics will require “analytical” cookies to be enabled in order to do so. These third party cookies are used to tailor content and information that we may send or display to you and otherwise personalise your experience while interacting with our Services and to otherwise improve the functionality of the Services we provide. We also enable schools to employ cookies and similar tracking technologies in connection with their use of our Services in order to allow them to track visitors to and interactions with their school website.
How eSchools Uses Cookies
eSchools websites may request cookies to be set on your device. We use cookies to let us know when you visit our websites, how you interact with us and to enrich your user experience. The cookies differ depending on the information. You can adapt your cookie preferences, although please note that blocking some types of cookies may impact your experience on our websites and the services we are able to offer. We will not, without your express consent, supply your personal information to any third party for the purpose of their or any other third party's direct marketing.
User Embedded Content
Our Services allows schools to embed code which may potentially contain cookies. Please note embedded content, if displayed on one of our websites, has been added by the school and not by eSchools. The embedded content added by the school may require additional cookies or tracking technologies to be enabled in order to function.
