Year 5 Visit the City of Durham

26th November 2024

Year 5 went to visit the city of Durham, starting with a tour around the magnificent Cathedral.  They took in the main parts of the building, including the nave, quire, and the tomb of St Cuthbert, discovering interesting facts along the way.  They also visited the Great Kitchen to explore the treasures of St Cuthbert, such as parts of his original coffin, his comb, and his pectoral cross. There was even a look at the original monk’s dormitory which is now a museum, and they ate lunch in the cloisters, where parts of Harry Potter were filmed, which naturally caused a lot of excitement.

After lunch, it was time to head into Durham marketplace, using some mapwork skills as they went, and spotting some of the colleges linked to Durham University – the Principle of St John’s College even came out and chatted to the children about his job at the college and what he does every day.  He was overjoyed to see children who had come for a visit to Durham and who were taking an interest in its university colleges.

The children were incredible, and made their teachers so proud with their curiosity and desire to learn. They were absolute superstars!
