Gateshead Reception

Welcome to the Gateshead Reception Class Page. Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.

Week commencing 5th October
This week Gateshead have been securing their understanding of numbers 1 - 3 in our maths sessions. They have all been doing so well with their subsitising skills too!

We began our Drawing Club this week, with our focus book being 'Dear Zoo'. The children have allowed their imaginations to create new characters, settings and adventures. We have heard some brilliant ideas, which have then inspired play afterwards.

In PE, we have had lots of fun becoming superheros and enjoying games with the parachute, and also practising our jumping skills.

We are continuing to work on our PSED too, enjoying Theraplay sessions to encourage team building and communication.
Week commencing 28th September
Throughout this week, we have learnt the following sounds in phonics, our music lesson and the children have explored these further in provision: e, l, h, r, and j.

During our maths sessions, the children have been amazing at creating repeating patterns. The children have demonstrated how to make repeating patterns with concrete objects as well as using body percussion and using each other to make patterns.

It has been National Poetry week and we have focused on the idea of 'I wonder...'. Our focus poem has been written by Simon Mole, and is called 'Woodlice'. We observed woodlice before creating our own poem about Ladybirds at the end of the week.
Week commencing 21st September
Another lovely week, Gateshead!

This week in phonics, we have met the sounds c, k, u, b and f. I wonder if the children can find anything around the house this weekend starting with these sounds? We have also been practicing our oral blending which the children are definitely starting to tune into!

In our English session, we have learnt the poem, 'A Basket of Apples' and we have been inspired by this to explore Harvest. If the children look out of the window tonight, they might catch a glance of the Harvest Moon!

This week in Maths, the children have had the tricky job of identify 'more than' and 'less than'.

The children have worked so hard, we have been so impressed with their perseverance throughout the week.
Week commencing 14th September
What a busy week we have had…

The children have started their letter formation in phonics. We have now learnt 10 sounds - m, a, s, d, t, i, n, p, g, o.

In maths we have been sorting different objects into groups of ‘the same’. The children have been amazing at explaining why things have been grouped in certain ways.

During our English, we have explored the NSPCC PANTS rule and why it is important to use our voices. We have been inspired by Peter H. Reynolds again, but this time we focused on the book, 'Say Something’.

The children have also learnt the importance of handwashing, we even learnt a new song!
Week commencing 7th September
What a brilliant first full week we have had! The children have been such kind friends and it has been lovely seeing new friendships emerge. The children have adapted to Reception life so well, we are all very proud!
