Thursday 22nd December
And just like that, we have made it to the end of term and what a wonderful term we have had!
We have had a fantastic week in school and we are all very excited for Christmas. Our trip to the pantomime was fantastic; the children absolutely loved the show, the singing and the opportunity to shout out and interact with the characters. On Tuesday afternoon, we had so much fun dancing and taking part in party games at our Christmas party. I have to say that we have some AMAZING dancers in Northern Ireland class who know how to dance and move!
As well as this, we had two lovely assemblies in school which the children thoroughly enjoyed. It's been a wonderful week rounding up a super term.
Well done to all the children in Northern Ireland class who have worked so hard this term and have been a pleasure to teach. Have a wonderful Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all in the new year.

Friday 16th December
We’ve had a lovely week in school and the children in Northern Ireland class have particularly enjoyed two things; Christmas dinner and Forest School, which coincidently fell on the same day! After a delicious Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, we put our layers on and headed out for a frosty but fun Forest School session! Some children chose to make their own “Stick Man” and then acted out Julia Donaldson’s story using their Stick Man in our forest area. Other children opted to draw their own scavenger hunts after they enjoyed completing a hunt last week. Another group chose to use some shells to create some natural art sculptures, inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. We had a fantastic afternoon and loved being outdoors in the cold!
Friday 9th December
This week, the children in Year 2 made myself and Miss Woolard incredibly proud as they took part in their first performance in school in front of an audience. The children performed a Christmas assembly that began with an amazing performance of "It's a Hard Knock Life" from the musical Annie. The dance and singing was performed by the amazing children in Miss McArdle's musical theatre group.
Then, a group of children shared some writing they had completed in English, describing who they are grateful for in their lives and what that special person does for them.
After that, it was time for the performance of "Whoops - A - Daisy Angel", a short Christmas play in which the clumsy angel, "Whoops - A - Daisy" gets the important job of leading Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. The children sang and acted brilliantly throughout their performance and it was lovely to see them smiling on stage and performing with such confidence.
Well done to all the children in Year 2; you made your teachers, family and yourselves extremely proud!
Friday 2nd December
It’s officially December, and the boys and girls in Northern Ireland class are very excited! We’ve had a wonderful week with lots of exciting events. On Thursday morning, the children took part in a Samba workshop with Mr Costello and it was fantastic! The children loved having the opportunity to play the instruments and create some musical tunes. It was lovely to see the children so excited and inspired.
Then on Thursday afternoon, the children completed their first of six Forest School sessions in our wooded area. The class absolutely loved being in the outdoors and having the freedom to explore. We started the session by exploring the area. Then, the children completed an activity where they had to find “tiny treasures” that could fit into a small tub. We shared our treasures and it was fantastic to hear the children explaining why they had selected an item as a tiny treasure. After that, the children had some exploration time; some children took the opportunity to do rubbings of different natural items, some children carefully observed and collected mini-beasts and other children made their own games up. It was fantastic to see the children to excited and enthusiastic in the outdoors. We ended our session with biscuits, hot chocolate and reading “Percy the Park Keeper – After the Storm”. The children have already been asking when they can next go out and do more Forest School!
Friday 18th November
What an exciting day we have had! The children in Northern Ireland class, LOVED celebrating Children in Need and helping raise lots of money for a very worthwhile cause. The children had a great time selecting their cakes from the cake sale and loved participating in the different games including; pin the patch of Pudsey, name the teddy bear and how many marbles are in the jar! It’s been a great day and the children have loved being part of it!
Friday 11th November
This week in our Geography lesson, we learned about Ypres in Belgium. The children developing their atlas skills by locating Belgium; the children were surprised at how small Belgium was in comparison to France and Spain!
After enjoying using the atlases, we looked at the impact that World War 1 had on the city of Ypres and also the different war memorials found in the city. The children were particularly interested in The Menin Gate Memorial and enjoyed watching the Last Post Ceremony.
We spent some time after the lesson discussing what it must have been like for people living in Ypres during the war, and also what it must have been like for the soldiers fighting. We then ended by watched a short animation that depicts the different stages of war in a child friendly way. The children responded extremely well to the video and identified how terrified the bunny was when the darkness came, but then how happy the bunny was when the sunshine reappeared and the fighting stopped. Next week in History, the children will be learning about Armistice Day and the significance of poppies.

Friday 21st October
Happy half term!
We have made it to the end of our first half term in Year 2, and what an action packed half term it has been! We've written stories, learned about our local area, counted in multiples of 10, developed our jumping and landing skills, carried our experiments and LOTS more!
The children have used their growth mindsets this half term, especially when learning has been challenging. They have been kind and caring friends to one another and supported each other brilliantly. The children of Northern Ireland class have worked conscientiously and we have had lots of FUN!
Well done to you all on a great half term and have a lovely, relaxing break.

Friday 14th October
"Battle of the Houses"
We had SO much fun in our P.E lesson on Thursday taking part in our first Battle of the Houses sports competition. The children put their athletics skills into practice by participating in a variety of different scored activities. The children in Northern Ireland class showed determination, focus and drive; in addition to this, they worked brilliantly as a team.
A big congratulations to TEAM TYNE for winning an additional 400 house points! We can't wait for our next House Battle!

Friday 7th October
This week we celebrated National Poetry Day by exploring a range of poetry in our English lessons and in our Information Station time. We then focused on a collection of poems from the beautiful book, "The Lost Words". The children in Northern Ireland class loved listening to the poems and seeing the stunning illustrations that went with each poem.
In our English lessons, we focused on the poem titled "Bluebell" from "The Lost Words". The poem was an acrostic poem that used lots of adjectives and repetition of colours. After listening to the poem and discussing the language in the poem, I informed the children that they would be writing their own acrostic poems this week, inspired by the poetry in "The Lost Words. We went on a nature walk to inspire us, then we generated lots of language and vocabulary for our poems.
The children then each wrote their acrostic poems; I was absolutely blown away by their poetry! It was absolutely beautiful and their poems would be a wonderful addition to "The Lost Words". Niamh read her poem aloud in our celebration assembly, and I wanted to share it on our webpage too.
Well done to all the children in Northern Ireland class, you are wonderful poets.

Friday 30th September
On Wednesday, we took part in Year 2 Inclusive Sports Festival at Thorp Academy. We had a wonderful afternoon and the children in Northern Ireland class thoroughly enjoyed the different activities organised and ran by the students at Thorp. The children rotated round a range of activities including football based activities and team based games. I was extremely impressed by the effort the children put into each activity and how well they listened to the pupils running the activities. In addition this, Miss Woolard and myself were extremely impressed with how sensibly the Year 2 pupils walked to and from Thorp Academy; they were extremely careful walking on the pavement and listened carefully to the instructions given to them.
A very successful and enjoyable afternoon!

Friday 23rd September
We've had another fantastic week in Northern Ireland class and this week, I would like to share the children's artwork! We studied artist Brian Pollard who is based in Devon and carefully looked at some of his very busy seascape portraits. The children noticed that in a lot of his work he had white fluffy clouds, boats, hot air balloons and lots of people! We had an interesting discussion where the children shared what they liked about his style of artwork and also what they did not like as much. The children then drew their own seascapes inspired by Brian Pollard and carefully coloured their pictures in, trying to stay within the lines and colouring in the same direction.
Below are just a couple of the wonderful seascapes some of the children produced in Northern Ireland class and I am sure you will agree that they did a wonderful job!

Friday 9th September
I have had a wonderful week getting to know the children in Northern Ireland class and have been extremely impressed with the maturity they have shown returning to school after the six weeks holidays.
The children have enjoyed the PSHE activities as well as writing about their dream birthday. We had great fun on Thursday morning making our colourful portraits. The children really impressed me with their creativity and their portraits are the perfect addition to our classroom.
Well done on a wonderful first week in Year 2 Northern Ireland class!
